Gregory House kills Sherlock Holmes
In early 2004, it was announced that Conan Doyle aficionado Stephen Fry was to play Sherlock Holmes in a TV drama for ITV, with his old sparring partner Hugh Laurie cast as Watson.
Ironically, it was the unexpected success of House – in which Laurie played the Holmes-inspired title character – that scuppered the project. Perhaps it’s for the best – we might never have had BBC One’s Sherlock if ITV was already airing its own Holmes hit.
