Hugh war in Paris und hat "The Gun Seller" promotet. Hier kann man das Interview runterladen:

    http://avaxhome.ws/magazines/LeParisien8Mai2009.html

Newspaper : How do you explain the success of the Dr House ?
Hugh Laurie : This show is well written. In 5 years I never read a script better than an average House episode. The humor, the ideas, the complexity, the philosophy of this show are fascinating. This character is loved because we all want to be free from social agreements. Everybody has this dream.

Is House an angel or is he evil?
Ah ! (thinking). He isn’t an angel but he is on angels’ side, he works for them. He isn’t evil either. Despite his flaws, I respect and like him a lot.

Does he give hope to his patients or despair?
In his mind, hope is secondary. Results and survival are first. But survival helps patients to have hope.

He lacks of compassion and humanity, is it a good way to show a doctor?
He isn’t an ideal doctor, but I disagree on the fact that he lacks of compassion and humanity. He doesn’t feel the need to express them, it’s different. He doesn’t look for others’ approval because he trusts his intellect enough.

Would you have liked to be a doctor?
I would have loved it ! When my father was a doctor, he took me to the London hospital in 1977. Then I almost wanted to do med school. When I think about it today, especially since I do the Dr House, I would have had sufficient time to pass a medicine diploma… But at that time I was lazy.

What do you think of being a doctor who’s on drogs ?
His pain is real, he needs these meds. In order to do his job, could he still be competent without them while in pain?

How did you familiarize with the medical universe?
Before the shooting I wanted to spend some time in an American hospital because there, the procedures are really different from the English and French hospitals, but I couldn’t. On the show I can ask for precisions to doctors. What does it means? I have to understand everything when I act it. In 20 minutes I learnt how the vascular system works. But I forgot everything 20 minutes later.

What did you bring to your character ?
I don’t really know… David Shore gets inspiration from Sherlock Holmes who was a violinist, I play music myself. It allows me to show the logic and mathematic side of House but also his ability to surprise others.

You also bring another thing to House, the shoes you collect.
At the hospital it’s normal to wear sport shoes because we’re standing every time. And I thought it was very touching that this man who can’t run nor plays basket actually wears that king of shoes. It’s his way to show that he wants to be free.

You’re an English who plays an American. What did you had to change in your way of speaking or in you behavior?
Dr House was always an American character. I tried to use my English accent for 10 seconds but I was told it didn’t work. There are too many things that divide House and the public… he’s alone, sarcastic, bitter… he’s an alien. We don’t need to add another culture. Taking the American accent is the hardest thing to do for me, along with limping.

What can you say to us about the 5th season while the 4th is over in France?
      Spoiler
We just finished shooting it. This season will have a wonderful ending. At the beginning everybody wonders about the consequences of Amber’s death.

Can we expect Greg House and Lisa Cuddy to get closer ?
      Spoiler
Yes… but I can’t give details. At the end, there will be a huge upheaval.

      Spoiler
Are you disappointed about Kal Penn’s decision to leave the show to join the Obama team ?
I can’t be disappointed if he wishes to work for his government. I admire his courage to take such an audacious decision. I’m not interested in politics. I don’t like the public aspect to my work as an actor, for a politic people it’s worse. In sports too. I wouldn’t like to be David Beckham for example.

How long would you like to be Dr House ? Would you like a Dr House movie ?
We’ve done more than hundred episodes and we’ll continue until the audience left us. A movie ? It would have to be very different from the show. In don’t see what it could bring to House but I’m open with the idea.

You wrote your book in 1994. Why was it published in France in January 2009 ?
(In french) Je ne sais pas ! (I don’t know). It has something to do with Dr House’s popularity. The world of edition is very different than the world of television. It’s unbelievable that you had to wait such a long time, but it’s a good Christmas gift though !

What made you start writing ?
I wrote a diary but my life bored me. I didn’t wanted to read it myself ! So I wrote about explosions, beautiful women. It started as a game. I wrote a couple of pages a day that I showed to my wife. It’s a lonely work, I almost became insane but it’s exciting to let the real world go to make room for your imagination.

You’re now writing a second book, what would it looks like ?
With that kind of book, either you only do 1 or you write 6. I decided to write 6. The second is difficult to finish so I think I’ll just start the third ! I’ll continue to write that kind of books because I always liked the stories of Agatha Christie, Raymond Chandler and…(he tries to find a French author) Georges Siménon ! (it’s a Belgian author lol)

You live in the US and your family lives in England, how did you manage the distance ?
In planes. We travel a lot between England and the US. My children study in England. If everything happened ten years ago, I would have brought them with me here. Now they’re grown up, they have their lives in England.

How do you deal with your popularity ?
Not very well. When I went to Spain for the holidays where the show is very popular, I had to be protected by bodyguards. I’m uncomfortable with that. Now there’s cameras and videos everywhere, a devil invention, we can barely keep our life private. It reminds me of the KGB : everybody can spies you, takes pictures of you, knows what kind of music you like, what are your favorite movies… that’s amazing, I can’t believe there won’t be serious consequences because of that.

You are a musician, an actor and a writer. What do you like the most ?
I always prefer the one I’m not doing ! When I play, I would like to write and to wear my own clothes but when I write, I’m so alone that I would love to be with a band and play music. It’s hard to explain. Music is my ideal and favorite activity. I would love to be in a jazz trio.

    Hugh und Jo in Paris.

Dann strengt mal euer Französisch an.
Steht nix Neues drin.

So you don't hate Hugh Laurie at the end of the day? "Oh my God, are you kidding me? I say the more abuse the better ... Hugh's probably more sensitive about it than anybody ... I get the feeling he feels kind of bad and he never should ... Hugh is a gem and a joy to work with, even when he’s making me feel like sh--."

'House' Star Peter Jacobson: 'I Would Make a Really Bad Doctor'

Vorsicht, das Interview enthält Spoiler für die gesamte fünfte Staffel!
