    Reden Smalltalk in English

Obviously the most of you watch the newest episodes of our favourite series on FOX. So I thought for myself, we could also talk about in English, if you'd like to. How I'd noticed there are many younger people in here, so you could teach yourself in that language, too. Well, for now I'm on my way home, but I'm already curious about your feedback!

Hope to hear from you soon on this page

well d.erda, I think your english is quite good.
Great idea to practise the english skills a bit. I also learned my english in english speaking counties but it were England and Ireland for me where I made some summer courses. There I also got infected with the Hugh-Laurie-virus for they was much stuff from him on telly.

On account of that I envy you, saoirse. Cause here you really gotta search a lot to find Hugh on television. There are his Hollywood hit movies of course, like "Stewart Little" and "Sense and Sensibility", but the really good stuff (A Bit of Fry and Laurie) has never been shown here, as far as I know

well a few years ago ARTE brought several english comedy shows like Blackadder, Fawlty Towers and Absolutly Fabulous in english with german subtitles. That was brilliant. And I also went always to shopping tours in the UK to buy the series and films I was interested in on video.
to be honest with you I never saw the american stuff Hugh did (only "the man in the iron maks" and House ).

Me, too. I know ABOFAL, like J&W, just by watching the DVDs. It's very sad and not understandable why these great series were never shown on German telly. But most of the german people don't understand the British humour, I think, especially those guys who produce the telly programme , so you have to be glad to watch BA about 11:00 pm on ARTE or something like that. It's horrible! I really know that I have to move back to England.

And, just sitting in front of my comp with I-Net for the right time, I cannot watch the newest HOUSE episode. What am I doing wrong? Could anyone send me an instruction, please? ... for next week ... Thanks so much!!

I think they wasn´t much on TV because the sereies suffers a lot from the translation. It takes out a lot of the wit. And oftenthe shows referring to topics that are not that much known here (for example Blackadder: the first two series where very much a Shakespeare-parody. It´s difficult to understand all the jokes if you not familiar withhis works ). So they didn´t show the series too often here.
We have to thank the inventor of the DVD

@ at Hugh1977: what exactly doesn´t work? Maybe can I help (just send me a PM)

I like the idea of having such a thread.

Funny thing about Germans is that they tend to have a quite low self-esteem when it comes to English. Problem is that we compare our English knowledge to the Skandinavian countries, which isn't a fair comparison because they don't dub (English TV with subtitles) and are sometimes better at it than the English themselves.
So don't be to hard to yourself and keep practicing.

Should we correct other peoples spelling or grammatically errors in this thread?

Does anybody here know "The IT Crowd"?
A really hillariously funny British comedy series that will surely never hit the German TV screen

British comedies is really the best. I'm currently planning a British evening with some friends. We already have so many movies and series we want to watch that we could expand it to a whole weekend. Blackadder is surely on top of the list.
Still need to convince them of Jeeves&Wooster
